ANDREA CAMILLERI The Patience of the Spider **(*)

I'd never come across them before, but apparently this is the latest in a series of detective stories set in Sicily, featuring Chief Inspector Montalbano. This one's about the search for a missing teenage girl.

It's an amiable enough read, but not terribly satisfying. There's nothing as complicated as a sub-plot. Every scene features Montalbano.

The translation from Italian is a bit creaky - probably because it breaks the cardinal rule of translation that it should be by a native speaker of the language it's being translated into.
