JOSEPH O'NEILL Netherland ****

A fascinating, thought-provoking novel about New York, life post 9/11, cricket, race, loneliness, belonging and not belonging, marriage and friendship.

Hans is a Dutch banker, with a passion for cricket (they do play it in Holland), working in New York. But 9/11 not only frightens his English wife, it shatters certainties - not least about their marriage, and she returns to London with their son.

Lost and lonely in a country he'd regarded as his new home, Hans finds comfort in a very unusual place - the thriving but almost invisible world of New York cricket, played by immigrants from Asia and the West Indies. Through cricket Hans meets Chuck , who dreams of establishing the city's first proper cricket field. But after a bit it becomes obvious that Chuck is caught up in a very murky world - which finally kills him.

An excellent book, beautifully written.
