This is the first book by Ian Rankin to feature Malcolm Fox - another Edinburgh policeman. But unlike the famous Rebus, Fox doesn't drink and is less bolshie - on the surface anyway.
He's part of the Complaints and Conduct department (known as 'The Complaints') who look into corruption and dodgy policing - making them highly unpopular with others in the force. It's a setting that should provide Ian Rankin with plenty of good stories.
In this one Fox investigates the case of a policeman suspected of being part of a child abuse ring. The trouble is he quite likes the man. Fox (and the reader) are constantly asking, "Is this true? Or has he been set up?"
It's a really good, atmospheric and gripping story.
