PAUL TORDAY The Girl on the Landing ****

Paul Torday is wonderful - and very different from most other novelists I've come across. I've enjoyed all his books and this is at least as good as any of the others.

Elizabeth has married Michael not because she's passionately in love with him but because he's a decent bloke with a lot of money. He also has a big house in Scotland, which she doesn't really like, but to which Michael is drawn.

Michael is also, Elizabeth acknowledges, rather boring. But, after a holiday in Ireland he starts to change - for the better. He becomes much more fun and alive, and they fall deeply in love for the first time. It's because - she discovers - he's stopped taking his medication.

Michael continues to change and it starts to become a bit - and then very - scary, and before long we're involved in a gripping thriller, narrated in turn by Elizabeth and Michael.

Quirky characters and an unsusual plot. Thoroughly recommended.
