VAN DYCK AND BRITAIN Exhibition, Tate Britain ****

Loved it.

Anthony van Dyck was the leading court painter in England just before the Civil War.

He's wonderful painting silk and lace and armour but amazingly it's the faces that really grab your attention. These are real people - like Lucy Percy in the picture here. What Van Dyck gives us isn't just hauteur and flattery, but also a personality. She's may not be an amazing beauty, but that little smile and the way she looks at us makes her someone you want to know more about.
