MILLAIS Exhibition, Tate Britain ****

I always thought Millais was a sentimental, approaching kitsch, painter. But he's gone up in my estimation after seeing this exhibition.

Yes, there are things like the horribly tacky "Christ in the house of his parents" (he's cut his hand on a nail in Joseph's workshop) and Bubbles. But there are also lots of fascinating portraits and some wonderful winter landscapes. (He was absolutely brilliant at depicting snow that's been lying for a few days.)

The other thing that was obvious was that Millais wasn't content to stick to a single style. He kept ringing the changes.
