Maybe I'd have liked this book more if I'd devoured it more quickly. Over the space of a month I kept forgetting which of the women was which.
It's a story of doomed and forbidden love during and after the second world war, starting in 1947, then moving to 1944 and ending in 1941. The reverse chronology didn't add a lot for me.
The best thing is the writing. Sarah Waters isn't content with broad brush-strokes, she describes everything in loving detail.
It's good, but I expected to like it more.
