Penelope Lively's stock-in-trade is memory and the effect of the past on the present, and this book is no exception.The twist is that each story is topped and tailed by autobiographical bits. The stories themselves are the result of Lively thinking, 'What if' her life had taken a different direction at various different stages.
It was mildly diverting but less than riveting.
