Apparently
those who have read Simon Mawer’s previous Booker-nominated novels think it’s
another case of someone from the literary top drawer lowering his standards to
produce something more commercial.
But
I haven’t read him before so could just enjoy this book for what it was – a
well-written, atmospheric and gripping thriller.
Marian
is half French and half-English and is recruited to go undercover in wartime
France – officially to work with the Resistance, but unofficially to persuade Clément,
a nuclear physicist on whom she had an adolescent crush, to be smuggled out of Paris
to London.
It’s
fun. And a real page-turner.
