PAUL TORDAY More Than You Can Say ***

What a disappointment! I thought Paul Torday could no wrong. His previous novels managed to combine page-turning plots with quirky characterisation, a bit of psychological insight and touches of surreal humour.

But if the cover of this book had told me it was written by Dick Francis I'd have believed it. It's an efficient thriller from start to finish, furnished with a series of cardboard characters.

Richard, the narrator, is an ex-Army officer, trying (and failing) to come to terms with life back in the UK after a traumatic time in Iraq. Throw in a few mad coincidences, a scheming Bond-style villain, a beautiful but mysterious woman, and the threat of terrorism and that's it.

It was a very easy read (hence the three stars) but I'm afraid Paul Torday has lost it.
