A bit of a disappointment, this one.
It's a black comedy featuring a Nobel prize-winning physicist whose best work is behind him but who uses every opportunity to cash in on his fame.
He's very sceptical about climate change until he's asked to head a government-backed initiative when he changes his tune.
He's also a compulsive womaniser, on his fifth marriage when the novel starts. But just for a change this marriage is coming to an end because it's his wife who's having the affair. The trouble is: he's still in love with her.
There are some very funny set pieces, but I got the impression that McEwan has had them stockpiled ready for use in a future novel.
