SEBASTIAN BARRY The Secret Scripture ****(*)

A fantastic book. It's quite densely written, so there were times when I'd read 20 pages and put it down not because I was bored, but because I felt full and needed to digest it.

Roseanne is nearing her 100th birthday in an ancient mental hospital in Ireland which is about to be closed down. Unknown to anyone else she's writing her tragic life story. At the same time the chief psychiatrist at the hospital is reviewing her case and writing his own journal.

Unlike with A Long Long Way, here the poetic writing works. It's a vehicle for Roseanne to tell her memorable story.

Do read it.
