SEBASTIAN FAULKS Engleby ****

The story of Mike Engleby, who is also the unreliable narrator.

Academically very clever, he's a loner who seems to absorb all the abuse that comes his way as he grows up.

By the time he gets to university (Cambridge) in the early 70s his amoral approach to life is in full swing. He steals, drinks heavily, and takes and deals in drugs. Very early on he meets the lovely Jennifer, joins the societies she's in and even goes to some of her lectures so he can be with her. She tolerates him but thinks he's pretty weird and would never have him as a boyfriend.

When Jennifer goes missing he is one of the police suspects, but they can't find any evidence.

Is he a murderer? He seems capable of it. But if he is he's totally blocked it out of his memory.

Eventually, in the present day the truth comes out.

It's a really good read and Sebastian Faulks does a brilliant job in making us want to get inside the mind of this unpleasant asocial man and work out what's wrong with him.
