MARKUS ZUSAK The Book Thief ***

Set in the second world war, this is the story of Liesel, a German girl who is fostered by a family near Munich when her Communist parents are sent to a concentration camp. Like most of their neighbours they are very poor and Liesel steals books, which she has come to love.

It's a good and moving story, but I think the author didn't have the confidence to tell it straight. Instead it's narrated by Death and there are lots of little headlines, summaries and pithy little sayings in bold type, which I found annoying.
