THE CAR MAN ****

I loved this modern ballet. Rachel felt a bit cooler about it.

It's by Matthew Bourne (whose Swan Lake with male dancers playing the swans has been such a big hit).

As the name suggests it's a reworking of Bizet's Carmen. It takes Bizet's music and the same themes of passion, machismo, murder and revenge but sets it all in a small Italian/American community in the 1950s. The characters all work at Dino's garage (hence the 'car man') or the next-door diner.

It's wonderfully energetic, funny and touching. I couldn't take my eyes off the stage for a second.
