KAZUO ISHIGURO Never Let Me Go ***

This novel presents an alternative Britain, but seen from the very blinkered viewpoint of Ruth, the narrator of the story.

She has been a pupil at Hailsham, which at first seems like a run-of-the-mill English public school. Until you realise that none of the pupils seem to have parents. What's going on? And what's the future they're being so carefully groomed for?

I like Ishiguro's gentle, unhistrionic style, but there were times when I got annoyed by the deliberate witholding of information. It's sad but readable.

I suspect that if you're into science fiction you'll either love it or hate it.
