MARINA LEWYCKA A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian ***(*)

I resisted this book for a while becuase for some reason I thought it might be too heavy-going. But having read it, I think it's actually a bit light-weight.

Despite the title it's a comic novel about an 84-year old Ukrainian widower who's lived in the UK since the war. He falls for and marries a voluptuous 36-year old Ukrainian gold-digger who wants a British passport. She makes his life hell and his daughters have to try and save him. He's an expert on tractors - which is where the book's title comes in.

I enjoyed it, because some of it's very funny. However, the more serious and dark bits when we flash back to wartime, didn't really convince me.
