TURNER PRIZE 2005 (Tate Britain, January) ***

Commenting on the Turner Prize finalists is hard, if you're not going to sound like [a] a total philistine or [b] a total pseud. But here goes.

Didn't like the winner Simon Starling's "Shedboatshed", where he took a garden shed and turned it into a boat which he sailed on the Rhine and then converted back into a boat. For me a piece of art should speak for itself - you shouldn't have to know the story behind it for it to make sense.

We did quite like Gillian Carnegie's monochrome landscapes, though, and Jim Lambie's black-and-white floor with huge colourful plastic birds (above) was great fun - it made you smile.
